Legend tells us that Melchior was the King of Arabia, a wise leader among the three magi who followed a wondrous star to Bethlehem. Known for his gentle demeanor and small voice, Melchior was the esteemed eldest figure, often depicted as the first to kneel before the Christ child, expressing deep reverence.
When the magi arrived, Melchior gifted gold to the newborn Jesus, a symbol of kingship meant to honor and acknowledge his royal stature. This precious offering stood alongside the other gifts of frankincense and myrrh brought by his companions.
Melchior's appearance was striking, characterized by luxurious, jewel-adorned robes that contrasted with his soft-spoken nature. He was known for his love of the harp, finding great joy and solace in its beautiful melodies.
At the impressive age of 116, after having a lifelong dream realized through his journey, Melchior was inspired by a vision of a child calling to him. Driven by this vision, he traveled to visit Jesus once more. Upon fulfilling his spiritual mission, Melchior passed away soon after, feeling at peace.
In death, as in life, the bond amongst the wise men remained strong. Balthazar and Gaspar tenderly laid Melchior to rest, honoring their enduring companionship. Their legend emphasizes the wisdom and unity they shared, enduring beyond their earthly lives.
